Should I go back to school for a master's?

Currently an SDE at Amazon with an undergrad degree in CS. I'm thinking about going back to school to get either a master's in CS or an MBA - I would like to move into more managerial position in the future or to accelerate my career. Does anyone have any experience with this?

How many years of experience do you have?

Get to tech lead and transition to junior manager. CS masters won't help at all with management and MBA isn't worth the opportunity cost. Plus the MBA might make you look too "management" to the engineers you'll manage. I don't think an EM actually needs any grad degree but never stop learning.

If you are looking to get a masters for the purpose of becoming an SDM, don’t. Waste of time and money. It’s not necessary. If you want it for other reasons, that’s another story. I have a BS in CS and it didn’t impede my management transition in the slightest.

The only reason you should be going for a masters is if you want to focus on a particular research area-like ML/distributed systems etc .Even then a one years masters is sufficient .

Get the MBA if you want to transition OUT of your current role not UP.

It's worthless unless you want to change careers or meet people.

PhD may be worthy, but master is a big no
