Another Master's question. Hopefully this is more unique. Basically, I am an SDET/automation engineer hybrid at my current job. Told my manager I wanna go to dev and planted that seed. But, realistically, not looking like I will internally transfer anytime soon. Got a referral from a friend at FB, got rejected without an interview. I have BS in Math and outlooks of getting an entry level dev job are getting bleak and I also wanted to enjoy the coursework following a CS degree. I am thinking of doing a cert+MS which will take 3 years total, a decent chunk of time. Would this even help me at all getting a dev job? Moreover, if not, what can i do after a 50 hour work week to get that first dev job?
3 months into your first job and looking at a masters already, eh?
I just feel stuck cause this job will only try and pigeonhole me into automation/SDET even more as time goes on. I guess out of desperation and the lack of a CS degree education that i wanted, I came the conclusion of a masters.
Internal transfer is the best way to go if your primary interest is dev, considering you are willing to wait 3 years. SDET to SDE is do-able in a lot of companies. I say this because your prior experience can still cause recruiters to approach you only for sdet roles. Masters is a good option but is not foolproof. Interviews are all based on LC.
Thanks for the reply. The masters was just something to break the montony of automation. I really dislike the work and at least with a Masters, regardless of industry experience, i'm learning something new. However, I realize that experience > anything else. And what you mentioned about recruiters is true: all i get are SDET or QA roles. No one even considers me for SWE and i haven't gotten any interviews so this is just me being super lost and hoping to learn of all possible options available to me.
Best of luck!
YoE?
I have worked at my current job for 1 year. (3 month full-time summer intern, 6 month part time intern, 3 month permanent full time)
