Should I join a golf club in the Bay Area?

Apr 11 14 Comments

I’m in my 30s and relatively new to the Bay Area so not much friends around here. I like playing golf, but none of my techie coworkers around here play golf. Are golf clubs good for networking / making friends for people around my age? There are also other amenities, like a gym and pool. Is it worth the money?

If you enjoy playing golf then why are you trying to factor in other things. Do it because you love the game. Don’t do it if you are trying to play just to fit in.

    • Sorry but that’s not the question. I enjoy playing golf, I play all the time, but should I join a golf club? Usually, golf clubs have really nice courses and you can play them unlimited times with the membership. Also there are potentially cool people you can meet and build a meaningful relationship with outside of your regular job.

Depends on the club. If they have local tourneys that’s a surefire way to meet people. Idk the demographics of your club but I’d check that out too otherwise you might end up with a lot of younger or older people that may be outside of your preferred friends group age. Joining a beer league for softball or kickball is also a great way to meet new friends and that you can also hang with more outside of a serious setting

As someone who has grown up in the Bay Area and been playing golf competitively since I was young, and seen members all over the Bay Area, there are only a few clubs worth joining. Most of the time, I’m not interested in networking, I literally just want to golf and not be bothered.

The ones worth joining are the ones that require sponsors, and will likely run you at least $25k a year in annual dues, not including the initiation fee. Any club that you can just walk in and join is probably not going to give you meaningful networking opportunities.

Most of the people at the clubs I’ve seen are well into their 40s if not 50s, so that can limit your opportunities to network a little if you’re in your 30s. I’m in my mid 40s and was often the youngest person in the room. It’s not a total blocker, just know that going into it. Good luck!
