I heard France is thinking about making unvaxxed people pay for hospital (even for those who pay taxes).
Do you think the government would generalize it to anyone not responsibly taking care of his health ? Like smokers ?
Would you support it ? Say, depending on your BMI, you’d get access to healthcare plans with different prices ? Perhaps it’s already the case in the US ?

  • Unlike being unvaxxed, smoking yourself doesn't affect the health of others. Except for second hand smoke which is why smoking is banned in most public places.

  • That was the case pre-ACA, now they can only charge an additional premium for nicotine users. It's a terrible idea and especially if you bring BMI into it, it's unscientific and racist.

It makes sense to reduce/eliminate health insurance coverage of hospital bills for unvaccinated folks who received in-patient covid treatment. They knew the risks, decided to rely on their natural immunity and couldn’t cope up with the symptoms. It’s unfortunate but insurance companies are not charitable institutions.

    • Nope. It kills low and slow and it's the person's fault. How about flu recipients not getting the vaccine and going to the hospital? Gonna shame them too? Same with drug overdoses. Your arbitrary assignment of "pandemic only" means nothing here. Point is personal responsibility and you're picking and choosing. Your argument doesn't stand.

The argument stands because there aren’t two shots that the people you are describing can take and significantly reduce their chance of receiving in-patient care. For this reason, I’d include flu recipients with covid recipients. Not drug overdoses or obesity because you can’t take a shot to cure them.
Lastly, this isn’t a matter of shaming anyone. Its just a matter of bringing in personal accountability into people saying no vaccine because my body my choice. Since it’s your body and your choice, it’s only fair to say its your medical bill.

For being unvaxxed seems fair - choosing not to have a free vaccine should have significant consequences should you contract the same virus you chose not to have the vaccine for, logically speaking. I think also fair for smoking and drinking, anything where there’s a very easily documented choice of increasing your risk of health issues and needing hospital resources.

    • Except you're not being fair, clearly. You're doing it for one thing, but there are dozens of other low hanging fruits that are ironically not be pursued for removal of coverage here. Do it for all. Fat? You're out. Drug overdose? You eat the whole bill.

Obviously just an opinion but I would be ok if the industry and/or gov announced something where there were financial implications for opting out of something that reduces risk of needing medical care, in a pandemic (due to the thing the vaccine is for).
