I also won’t leetcode. I’ve got a life to live.

Here in Germany you can get 90-100k without doing algo puzzles. Should I just stay here? I’m not really down to move back to the US rat race if to make 120k at a shit startup.

    • Europe is shit. Not only they have high taxes, but during Covid they were closing everything. On the top of that they have energy crisis now because they made many stupid choices in terms of energy supply. And yeah, the war is another thing. I love my family in Europe and would love to live there, but please bring some US TC and US taxes there than. 50% of taxes is toooo much. And bring some freedom.

Everything isn’t about money. You do you!
If you’re happy in Germany so be it.
You dont need us money-crazed weirdos to tell you how to live your life.

  • There's plenty of US based companies hiring in Germany with TC well over 100k. DigitalOcean is one of them and doesn't have leetcode style Interviews.

  • If you have family, you get free health care, 30 days vacation, work life balance back in Germany. As an American citizen you can come back anytime. Why not enjoy your stay in Germany and travel around Europe?

    • 'Free' health care in Europe is usually shit. When I lived in Europe I was paying for doctor regularly because wait times were in months, sometimes in years. Even in Germany, many people opt for private.
30 days vacation, well in the US you can have 20. And take 10 days more as unpaid - and you're still left will much more money.
WLB is a myth in IT as well. Outside IT, yes, Germans are very strict about WLB.

  • Plenty of jobs out there where you dont have to LC, but I would not assume better WLB. Dont you get a bunch of the summer off in Europe?

    • Ya, I have worked with companies in Germany and the people just disappear for all of December and then a month to month and a half in the summer.

You can double your TC in US, but dont expect time off like that. You will also pay for anything health related. We also probably have shittier beer in most circumstances.

Most US big tech companies are now ‘unlimited vacation’ which usually equates to you being able to get 4 weeks off along with a random assortment of company holidays. Rarely is time off taken in a block larger then two weeks and you normally only see that happening once a year for most employees(if at all).

I hate when people think in Europe you don't pay. When I lived in EU I always had to pay because wait times are just insane if you don't pay. Also, if you're in Eastern Europe, you're expected to bribe a doctor on every visit.
