Been working as a consultant for 3 years after graduating, had some good time and made some good connections. Been thinking about where should I go next? Ex-coworkers went to in-house and IB. I know IB is where the $$ is but kinda worried about coping with the WLB. It will be stepping out of my comfort zone to move to IB right now. What should I do for faster career growth?
How many years of experience do you have? If trying to switch to IB, bulge brackets would be difficult and even so you'd most likely begin as a first year analyst. As strange as it sounds M&A consulting is very different from investment banking M&A, let alone IB itself. This would not be the faster career growth path unfortunately. I would suggest moving into a strategic role af a tech firm for more opportunities as it will open up more roles in that regard.
It depends on what kind of M&A consulting .. IB you need the same skills at an analyst level and then it is sales later .. personally I have done both IB and consulting .. I didn’t care for both in terms of WLB. You can move to other roles as well in tech firms ... don’t have to do in-house corporate development
I made a sort of similar transition albeit farther along in my career. I had about 5 years of experience in a transactions services role and wanted to break into IB. I did use a full time MBA to do so, and started as a post MBA Associate. I agree with the other poster from MS that it is not necessarily the fastest or most efficient route - if I were an IB Analyst I could have been an Associate 3 years in, and instead I took 7. That being said, your career is long and you should pursue what you’re passionate about. I would strongly caution you that the money itself is not a sufficient motivator to do this career. You simply work too many hours. You need to have a longer horizon career thesis to make it work.
