Hello Blinders, I am in early 30s. Married no kids. I am in Atlanta GA working as Full Stack Engineer. I am trying to maximise savings and do something new challenging work which I can be proud of. I dont feel challenged enough so far and seems like most company in GA are slow paceed. I am sure you will have lot of challenging work in Bay Area but does it make sense to move with below TC. Current TC- 180k (Perfect WLB work like 5hr/week) Future TC- At what amount I should move. I feel like food would be 1k more expensive per month. Rent 1.5k more paying 1.5k right now. Other should be pretty much same gas may be 2k more a year. Thats like 32k more per year. Lets make it 35k and double it for taxes. So 70k. So does it make sense to move if I get 250k plus job in SFO. Again lot of calculator and doesnot feel like that accurately depeicts most cases example insurance mostly company pay all.
Where do you work in Atlanta that has 180k TC? I’m considering doing the opposite of you to be closer to family/friends. I will say don’t do it for the money that’s why I moved here and I haven’t really enjoyed it that much.
The grass is always greener on the other side.
Well atlanta sr mostly make 130-140 its easy to find. But if you play your cards you can get 160-180k for sure again that would be probably like 5-8 percent but there are.
SF/Bay Area is Tech Haven, but living hell ... Commutes, Expenses. Go for minimum 300+
🍿
Agree on calculation so far, except that if you can join good companies then you’ll get free meals everyday. So food will not cost 1k more. And also higher cost of living doesn’t only mean things are more expensive, but also higher quality too. Best of luck if you try to move to Bay Area!
Yes it will not. I was being generous, but again wife will need to eat ;)
Now that I think more about it. Housing will cost more than 3k per month if you want to be close to work. Unless you work in San Jose than housing cost is actually still reasonable
omg @moveornot this is a great question, I am in early 30s, Married no kids, trying to maximize savings, Full stack Engineer, but I'm moving from San Francisco to Atlanta 😂😂 (not at will) we could exchange some thoughts DM me?
No
Atlanta has a lot more potential than most seem to think. And for a drastically lower COL.
Bay Area has many more opportunities, and life in general will be harder (more work, more commute). A 2 bedroom apartment in a crappy school district AND 30min commute to work will run $3K+. If you plan to have kids in the future to be in a good school district, and if you want to own a home, it will be easily $2M+ within a reasonable commute distance. You need $400K in cash downpayment for that. In terms of your career, it is probably better. In terms of your quality of life, it will be much worse. If you think you are good, you can get $300K-$400K+ in a few years. It's ok to take the chance and see how things go for a few years. You can probably always go back.
Thats the other thing life is really chill now. Literally not much work.
How long do you think that can continue? Is your company or location going to survive? If it doesn't, do you have many other options? You easily have 25+ years in your worklife.
Why not seattle ? Companies you tagged pays similar TC in seattle, less tax , less cost of living...
Its glommy and rainy. I want that sun light.
Why the tagged companies?
1) Usually get more response. I have tried others as well. 2) More active from there and you will find someone in same situation who moved there. 3) Targetting there.
It’s spam: don’t do it
