Does it make sense to stay at amazon and push for L6? Currently been at Amazon for 3 years and TC 220, sde2. Manager hinted that I may be next for promo to l6 if I continue to work hard and deliver results. Problem is.. the team already has two l6 sde’s and he has never mentioned a timeline for promo to me except a distant maybe. Previously few people left the team because they thought there was little to no promo opportunity. The bar has been dropping in the team and the team environment is becoming hostile since a good number of people left. Let’s say I get promoted, it may take 2-3 years for that to happen? Then another year for maybe TT rating and another year for noticeable promo TC bump... so it maybe take up for 5 years for a nice jump in TC? (>300k?) My goal is to optimize for TC and reach FIRE early. Should I continue to work hard in this team or should I put that time and effort into LC and interview prep and jump to another company for high TC?
If your goal is to maximize TC and retire early, leave now. You can get almost 300 at another company right now
Should you work hard to maybe make desired TC in 5 years, or should you shop around for a job that pays that TC right now? Seems like a no brainer.
Then why is there 15% of people voting to stay at Amazon? 🧐
Do both. Continue to work hard at Amazon and do a few interviews after a moderate amount of prep.
It blows my mind that this idiotic question is posted so often, especially by anyone at Amazon.
Cuz of the 15% of people voting to stay at Amazon? 🧐
Whats your YOE, if you dont mind me asking. Also, to provide you a perspective, your TC would most likely be around 255-260k after promo so dont expect much that promo would help you shoot your TC high
L6 starting after promo is $250. L6 new hire is $300. Sux but true
How does it work when you’re promo’d? Do you get a new offer letter or something?
When you say the environment is becoming hostile, is that affecting you personally? If so, definitely start looking to leave. Also, since you're optimizing for TC you can get 270-300k without too much trouble. Only argument I see for staying is interviews and prep are a huge time sink and maybe you want to save yourself that trouble.
