Confusion

Two years ago I’ve gotten an ENG offer from Lyft and a DS offer from Uber. I ended up joining Uber as I thought I would learn more, have bigger challenges and was more impressed by the caliber of the team.

I recently I started thinking about leaving, I felt like it became harder and harder to get other teams to collaborate, several of the strongest people I worked with have left and my manager isn’t great...

Fast forward 5 weeks I’ve now gotten offers from several companies incl. Lyft & Airbnb (both for ENG/ML roles).

Airbnb and Lyft offers were more or less comparable (considering valuations) and significantly better than my current one. which made it easy for me to decide to leave Uber and take some time off to decide between the options. I gave notice to my manager and a day later I was summoned to meet a VP which said they’ll immediately bump my package, matching Lyft and mentioned I could transfer ladders and orgs (obviously depending if the team is willing).

I was already excited about the new opportunities, but now feel like it’s harder to rationalize the move.
I liked the people in both companies, and it def felt like I could enjoy the environment more but I’m trying to understand if it’s a “grass is greener on the other side” type of situation or truly a better environment for me.

Did anyone have a similar experience?

Have you stayed after a counter and became happy/happier for long ?

Have anyone ended going from Lyft<>Airbnb, what were the differences ?

Did anyone recently leave Uber and can share their experience? I know several people who left but they all have a bias to make me join one of the companies :)

🙏

Whenever you send out the notice, never go back again. Managers just need more time to find someone else to replace you. Don’t let their problem become your problem.

I will never accept a counter offer after resigning even if the offer is significantly more.

Leave but not for Lyft. That firstly seems a step backwards and secondly you will burn trust with current colleagues for going to a direct competitor. Just go with Airbnb

Agree it’s best practice not leaving for a competitor.

Sorry this is BS and outdated advice.

Go where the best fit is. I’ve had friends at Lyft go to uber and vice versa.

One of the best product people went Lyft>Uber>Lyft and now gets paid better then most product people.

If you’re good nobody will care. Trust me.

You should leave Uber. It's not a "grass is greener" thing. Lyft and Airbnb are well known to have a better, more collaborative culture than Uber. You weren't happy there. Try something new. You may want to try Airbnb for something new outside of ridesharing. Also, the head of eng (also manages data science) at Airbnb is really great along with other executives such as the CEO and CFO. Airbnb has less chance of being beaten by a competitor due to global network effects.

If you go there will be trouble. If you stay there will be double.
