Have been working as a quant in Citi for a year now. There are no new models being created. I have only been maintaining old models. A lot of teams in my company are focusing on data science projects rather than quant projects. I don't feel like I'm growing
Why do you call yourself a quant? Is it in your job title?
Whatever it is, this “quant” really made me laugh! 😂😂😂
Sounds like a Citi problem, not a quant problem
I don’t think one year of work experience is enough to judge the entire company. Do you completely understand the old model and projects? Building new things for new things’ sake is not necessarily adding any value. Undergrad and novel projects are not indicative of what actually works in the real world. Business stability is the most important factor in a finance company.
What's the difference between a data science project and a quant project
Other thing is that if you solidly, actually have that skillset, they should bend over backwards to try to keep you (do you know how many shitty analysts and "data scientists" there are?). Just have a quick conversation with your manager or your skip and tell them you'd like some extra responsibilities.
Lol, or he's just trolling us with and alternant pronunciation of quant
I’m glad at lease someone else is also thinking like me!!!
Reading the replies make me amaze, how naive engineers are!!!
Are you in FO? I have been both algo quant and pricing quant. Frankly speaking, data science projects are just left join in Q (or worse in SQL)... ML in finance is a joke (at least on sell side). I found myself enjoying more on the derivatives pricing side. It is solid and well established. Well the grass is always greener on the other side. Don’t be a fool chasing the “unicorn”. You might end up in a much shittier situation compare to what you have now.
So in derivatives, you get to perform simulations in the form of option pricing? What about ML in finance being a joke? Care to shed some light on that?
1. Correct 2. No real use application. The only use is to replace traders’ job so u can see some push back from there. In terms of “prediction” lol, I would say it is hard to even predict the present, which is honestly what ML is really good at. The future is not predictable :-)
Do what keeps you happy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
