Should I stop climbing the ladder?

I’m currently a software engineer at a well known large tech company (left airbnb a while back), but all I do is pretty boring stuff. I’m paid around 150k base and the equity is about 80k per year at this point. I’ve wanted to pursue my own projects / startups for a while, but I keep getting pulled back into the rat race of trying to get promoted. I know a promotion will probably increase my total yearly compensation by around 70k based on my data points, and it is good money. I am on track to get promoted in about a year as well (manager basically promised me that and I’m a pretty high performer). But I really don’t like what I’m doing in my job and I wish I had the nerve to just leave the rat race and spend time trying to build my own company. How can I justify leaving a potential increase of 70k for a leap of faith towards a much riskier path of building my own company? I’m turning 28 soon so I’m not getting any younger at this point. I just hate the thought of wasting my best years slaving away for an extra 70k. tc: 230 yoe: 3

The higher you climb the harder the fall.

that’s what i’m worried about too, if i keep saying “i’ll quit after the next promotion”, will i just keep saying that forever?

no this is not correct, if u cant climb up when you grow older like 35+, you will be jobless

Can you do side project first on your own, once there's traction then quit

It really depends on what your goals are in life. For me, I’m turning 30 and I want a long term relationship. So I slowed down my career and devote more time in dating and meetup with guys. Once I am in a relationship, I might resume climbing ladder again TC : 350

🤣 28 and not getting any younger 🤣 The answer is simple - if you want to sabotage your career for the 0.002355% chance of success then go ahead. If you’re a true strong performer, it would be super easy for you to stay and do your project on the side and have something viable before 30.

Get inspired by techlead. He was working 80 hrs a week at fb and still had enough to run his small little thing on the side 🤣

He makes about half of his previous salary just from vloging. I'd say he's doing pretty good.

Dont quit, start your project now. MVP it. Run it past other founders, they will intro you to VC's. Gauge their interest, the rest will take care of itself.
