Should I switch to startup from big corp being on h1b

Jun 1, 2019 37 Comments

I have mostly worked with media and entertainment space for most of my career but been stuck as sr. Software engineer here at fox since last couple of yrs without any growth even after doing lots of cool Stuff, which I still like . Recently I got a really handsome offer from a startup . Being on h1b is it safe to join startup ? Or should I continue here and start preparing for FAANG.

  • Being at Fox for another 10 years might kill your career unless you are sure you can grow to a VP position.
You need to decide if being in US is more important than being competitive.
Yes, startup is a risk and might be better to move to a tech company, (not media), but startup might be better than where you are career wise.
Also, 4m valuation after 10 years is pretty shitty. Why do you think it's a good start up?
    1) total funding rounds
    2) exit strategy
    3) portfolio of investors
    4) business model
    5) your role
    6) LinkedIn profile of your colleagues
Check at least the above before considering it. Start up can be great but you need to know how do pick the good ones.

Are they getting you a green card or what? You better get your green card first, no?

10 years is a long time to be staying in a company without any tech growth or advancement. I would move to a start up, while continue to do practice interview coding for FAANG. Good luck!

@codeyogi. Don't mind me asking this but did Fox initiate your GC? Mind telling me your Priority Date? You can send me private message rather than replying here if you don't want to. Also, customary in this site - current TC and Location?
