Hi all, just got email from LinkedIn that they would like to move on with an offer. However, I just changed my job from Indeed to join Google(Youtube) about 6 months ago(I actually got the Google offer in June but due to visa issue, can only join full time by Nov last year) LinkedIn: Pro: 1.They will prolly offer me Senior SWE pos, need to confirm with recruiter during offer call 2. Coming from Indeed, similar product scope and the job market is trending 3. Better pay, even better WLB than Google Con: 1. Less exciting projects and internal transfer opportunities, much narrower product space and business (Can LinkedIn internal transfer to MSFT?) 2. Google will prolly not hire me ever again if I jump ship within 6 months of landing :) 3. All the technical growth and knowledge exposure I will miss out on if I leave Google so soon 4. Visa transfer hassle Google: Pro: Let's admit it, Google is still pretty much top of the top best all-around options out there in the field (wlb, benefits, company culture/name brand, technical growth, talent, products etc) and as an early career professional it is still the best place to learn and grow. Also stock is still on the rise. Con: 1. Due to visa issue I mentioned, I wasted ~6months from accepting Google offer to join full time, by which time I was(and still am) still a L3 after having 2 years of full time experience... talked to the manager the other day, the notorious promotion program at Google basically means I'm stuck with a L3 for another 1.5 - 2 years, by which time I will have worked full time 4 years but still on the Entry Level(New Grad) position... 2. I working at Youtube recommendation backend. Somehow I think it lacks diversity a bit. I found out my team and like 3 neighboring teams all have the same demographics: 7-8 Chinese/ABCs, and maybe 1 or 2 of other ethnicity... I am not trying to be biased but I do enjoy working more with more diverse sets of people 3. All things at Google are internal. No Opensource exposure, no third party tools and services(I prefer Slack much much much better than Chats hehehe) feel like in a bubble What do you guys think? Thanks in advance! Happy job hunting! #youtube #google #linkedin #jobs #swe
Tough choice, comps?
Iām early in the interview process with LI and others, but otherwise in a very similar positionā¦ 3 YoE with 10 months at G (L3). For me, it comes down to bigger scope and higher TC. Yes, G is pretty good, but we are both still early in our careers and can always come back to G later on.
I know if you can be sure if you can go back, G interviews are hard
How can you say Google is top of the top when you are likely going to be the same level as a new grad until 4 YOE or more? Iād recommend faster growth companies early in your career and go to G when youāre ready to coast.
+1 on this. I thought companies like G were notorious for slow promo/growth
I feel you hard on the last point and is being one reason for me to want to leave
TC or GTFO
I guess it would depend on your current TC. btw how was Linkedin onsite? did you interview for senior swe role?
Don't move to msft from LinkedIn unless you want a paycut
Are you sure we have better WLB than Google? Itās team dependent. Company wide, we do have more time off. LinkedIn also has a lot of Chinese/ABCs/Indians unless you are in SRE or IT orgs. Itās pretty much the South Bay demographics. Is the LI team you are matching to more diverse? itās a catch 22 situation. We want to have more diverse teams. But if you see teams that are not and shy from it, we canāt fix the problem. People are nice here. Just because they have the same ethnicity, they donāt necessarily have the same background.
tc?
