I feel worthless at my job. I feel like I can make much more money and have a better quality of life if I didn’t work for a company. I would make my money through entrepreneurial means. As an entrepreneur I find financial success through means such as freelancing, labor intensive jobs, and other opportunities. I actually currently do these things while maintaining my full-time hardwwdare engineering job. As an entrepreneur I find it very demeaning to work hard on a project to the point of success and not receive any of the fruits of my labor except for my salary (no bonus). In an ideal world the harder I work the more money I should make. My fulltime Job doesn’t provide me with this, but entrepreneurialship does. When looking at people that I work with at my full time job and especially those who have been with the company for 10 to 20 years; it seems like they are in the same position in their life except for the slowly 2-3 percent merit increase that they receive. While the higher ups are making tens and 15 and 20 times my salary I feel like I’m at the wrong end of the stick. I am not hating/jealous of those that are higher up in the company because they’ve Been able to put themselves in that position of success. It feels though as if I’ll never be able to be in their position except for working with the company and having some one in 1 million chance of somehow becoming a top executive. I would have to wait until the right chance. I feel like it’s too slow of a process and I hate letting someone else judge when I can be in that type of position. I should take control of that on my own. The only way I see myself taking control is if I quit and start working for myself through my own means. Or am i over my head and continue to be patient and continue to wait for the right opportunity? I will add that the company I currently work for has a great work life balance. I’m not sure if I would find the ability to have this much freedom as any other company if I were to change to a different company. Looking for advice. Education: Masters Computer Engineering, Bachelors ECE hardware engineer, focus in RTL Development YOE 3.5 TC: 80K (from my full-time job)
What kind of entrepreneur things do you do ?
Freelancing, event catering/concessions, used auto sales My salary is funny. I essentially give so much of my life away to take home 45K
Are you happy and content doing all this? And think you can survive doing this long term without a stable job?
I hate the concessions because of the employees I manage and deal with. You can Imagine it’s not the cleanest of jobs. I wish I could do meaningful engineering work but get paid much more than I currently do. And have unlimited growth potential. Meaning 1 hour of work != to 1 hour of pay. I don’t want a cap to my pay. In my other jobs (concessions or auto sales) 1 hour of work May have a much higher payoff. There isn’t a cap. While it isn’t stable I feel joy when I finish working when freelancing I charge 80 dollars an hour. While it sucks that it’s 1 hour of work to 1 hour of pay, it’s higher pay than my ~40 dollars an hour from full time job
If you don’t like your job then leave it of course. Just find another one before that.
Location?
Raleigh, NC
So the 80k is not as bad
You can make a lot more out on your own. You also take on a lot more risk. Pick the balance that works for you
I feel this I feel that, wtf? Stop crying, and do a thing or you’re not cut to be an entrepreneur. You come across like a unionized worker
Entrepreneurship isn't for everybody, but it sounds like it might be for you. You're totally right that you'll probably never be one of the bigwigs at your current company. For the most part the way you become a bigwig isn't by working your way up the corporate ladder; it's by taking a risk and trying to make something on your own. Many of us are comfortable taking home our relatively stable and consistent salaries and aren't troubled if the company is making a profit on us. After all, they wouldn't hire us if they thought it would cost them more than we bring in. But that way of thinking doesn't work for everybody. They want their reward to reflect the effort they put in. If that's you, starting your own business or businesses may be what's best for you.
If your entrepreneurial pursuits are yielding more money than your current TC or at least enough to make some profit after expenses quit your job. If not don't quit till you can eat off your preneur. Not sure what answer you're looking for.
The preneur preuns, he doesn’t give. I think you mean enterprise.
