Showing competition backfired with recruiter

A recruiter at MS reached out to me for doing an online assessment. I said I'd love to do so, and mentioned I'd like to expedite things because I have just completed 2 onsites with FAANGMULA companies and have another 2 scheduled for within a week. The recruiter pulled the interview request because they said the timeline doesn't make sense for them but if things change to reach out to them. I replied back and mentioned that I have about a 2-3 week window before I would have all the offers on the table and asked how long they would need because I would really like to interview there as it was one of my top choices, and I didn't get a response. My whole point in mentioning that was to either expedite the process, or skip directly to an onsite. Is this a good strategy to use or should I be selective in mentioning it? Has this backfired for anyone else? I've had it work in my favor before for smaller companies, but I am frustrated with this situation because I feel the recruiter is being unprofessional and not trying to secure "top talent" for the company because of ego or what not.

Companies response this way are shithole companies. Just ignore them.

I’d say it’s more the recruiter than the company.

Is Microsoft really a shithole though, or is it the recruiter?

Hard to say. I’ve also used this before (because it was true), and it did help expedite to an on-site after an initial assessment call. Unfortunately this feels like it’s dependent on the recruiter and their personality. 🤔

😂🤣 I guess recruiters are now on blind and they know the tactics!

Possibly the recruiter didn’t like what you were trying to get at or the way you worded the message and moved onto one of the other 100 candidates they’re in contact with. There have been a lot of layoffs lately; a lot of candidates on the move. Just move on and join FAANG.

Never heard anyone complain about not getting into Microsoft so you’ve probably lost nothing. Recruiter realized that it’s quite unlikely you’ll go with their offer if you have so many other opportunities.

I rather have as many options on the table to use for negotiations, between down leveling happy companies and the hiring bar at G&F. Ugh.

Apple did the same to me. Li recruiter reached out again to double click before scheduling when I said I have an offer. On average, MS compensation won't beat FAANGULLA. Including all the benefits might match 1-2 companies. Recruiter might feel it's better not to waste time. Don't boast about other offers or on-site interviews. But say you are actively interviewing and couple were lined up.

Well I was being honest about it all, the one thing that MS offered for a smaller salary was significantly better WLB than all but Google. Which is one of the reasons I wanted to interview there. I rather be happy and make a bit less than be miserable with 20% more in income. Frustrating.

Try to bring up that in your conversation. Also don't put deadlines to them in that first call. You can say I would like things to be expedited as I'm actively interviewing at other places.

Bad recruiter. Usually your offers show that you’re a desirable candidate so it could be an easy close to get you into the onsite loop quickly. But like someone already said the recruiter probably realized you wouldn’t accept Microsoft’s offer since they tend to pay a bit less than other FAANGMULA. Next time try to tell them you have completed one onsite, not so many ;)

Microsoft lQPd38 Feb 5, 2020

Likely: ok but not a strong resume, so they cannot match you quickly to a HM

It is decided case by case whether to expedite or pass on a candidate who is already in very late stages of job search process. Sometimes the recruiter will decide it is not worth to expedite a candidate who probably is more interested in the other offers and end up in a bidding war. Could also be resume not aligned to the role enough that they want to give you special treatment.

Better than being a pawn in a tc monkeys bidding war. Well done recruiter, and op next time you’re on a date you should try a similar strategy who knows it might work out for you 😚
