One of my previous tech employers (an early stage startup) was an almost unsurpassably awful place to work. To really shred them on Glassdoor, I'd like to only report facts, some of which may identify me. Is there any reason why I should wait to do this? I'd like to join FANG or another top company in my next role, and am wary of any potential repercussions if leadership at the ex employer figures out that I wrote the review.
First check your contract with them for any non derogatory statements they might have included.
How would a requirement not to disparage the company be enforceable? I've never heard of anyone having legal issues for shredding an employer on Glassdoor.
If you received severance, the employer will usually put some non-disparagement clause. Then again, they can never prove it’s you through glassdoor.
Don’t risk it. I know its tempting, but get a good job, take some rest and do it in a few months.
This is the most risk averse approach, which has been my plan until now. I'm somewhat reluctant to wait until I move on from Bloomberg, at which point it will be nearly 3 years later and the bad employer may be out of business and thus immune from my review.
Then go for it! Put the last nail on the coffin ))
Read "bad blood". Theranos was known to come after previous employees in many ways. For reviews or talking to reporters etc, they would come after very hardly with threat of lawsuits by top lawyers and harrassment in many ways. But I hope most start-up founders may not be as sociopathic, malicious, resourceful and politically connected as them.
For Glassdoor reviews? Really?
Read my comment above and shadows very similar to theranos actions. These Type A’s hide behind their companies for personal agendas. Look at that Elizabeth holmes girl now, not so tough anymore with no resources like the rest of us
Seriously, shred them.. employers for too long have gotten away with treating employees like crap with very little repercussion. I’m saying this from the same viewpoint as you. I’ve had a former boss hate me so much that got me fired AND tried to sue me (using company resources) by making up false reasons. This is coming from a well known Fortune 100 company.
Did you have to go to court? What happened when they tried to sue?
Sent cease and desist with further threats of litigation months after getting fired for stuff I wasn’t even doing. I mean, I was fired months ago, wtf do you want from me? Had to spend $$$ on lawyers to hit back and basically say I have evidence of for a countersuit so Eff off or it’ll be game on
Ask yourself what you have to gain by leaving your scathing review, and what you have to lose. You can always write your nastygram now, and hold on to it and decide whether to post it later.
YES!!!!! SHRED THOSE MOFO’s and post the review here
Never ever do this. The industry is a very small place, people talk. You gain absolutely nothing by being a dick, other than thinking you'll feel a bit better. And will you actually feel better? To what end? You had some experiences, take as much positive out of them as you can and move on with your life.
Lol, no it’s not. Millions of people work in tech/startups.
I wouldn't be "being a dick." I'd be giving the company's leadership a long overdue taste of its own medicine, and some valuable feedback that everyone has been too scared to give them.
Send me the review, I'll vet it so that no one can identify you.
Your ex boss could land at FANG in future, and may make it harder to get in there.
I'll keep that in mind. But how likely is it that they'd have any say over my interview, in a company of tens of thousands of employees? TBH I'd be surprised if either cofounder ever joins FANG, but it's not impossible.
Google emails every one who had overlap with a company you worked at for feedback. I've received several for people at my ex-employer (a very large company), half of whom I don't know. But I still get email to ask if I know and have worked with them, and give feedback if yes.

People write scathing reviews all the time for tiny companies that must know exactly who wrote the review. There are no repercussions the employer can take other than spamming fake positive reviews.
What about the background and employment history check at FANG? Before my onsite at Google last April, I was required to fill out a form explaining why I'd left each of my previous employers.
I'd be worried that someone might call up an ex boss and ask for their opinion of me, which will obviously be negative if I identifiably shred their company on Glassdoor
