Get a job with a county or a large city. Benefits for life, vacation and you barely have to work. Great WLB

Then on the opposite side, my gf who is also a transportation engineer in the gov loves how chill and how much free time she has with her job with a decent pay and insane number of vacation days and wouldn't trade anything for it. So each to their own I suppose.

Lol and your second reply to this thread isn't also just elaborating your initial reply of saying essentially the same thing? Two can play that game so might as well give OP more data about both sides.

Where do you live? My GF makes a little over 100k and she's been working for a few years as a transportation engineer in the bay area.

Caltrans - she got her PE after two years of graduating from college. That's the minimum requirement to get a PE in california. But if you don't have a PE, I think you start at around 60-70k. With a PE, she jumped into range D.

So personal experience from two different government sectors is that working for a government will get you either bad pay or bad benefits because or both because they aren't as good as they used to be but might still be slightly better than private although many large private companies are offering better benefits in terms of health insurance. Depending on the group you end up with either you'll have a toxic atmosphere or you'll end up with no WLB. If you do end up in a good place then it's going to be hard to move up in financial compensation fast. The flip side is private is unstable and you'll DEFINITELY have little WLB but if you're good with hard work then you won't have to worry about being out of work because the field is pretty strong in terms of keeping people busy.
