Signaling Interest to Recruiters on LinkedIn?

What are your thoughts on signaling interest to recuiters on LinkedIn? - I like exposure to new opportunites, but since LI “can’t guarantee complete privacy” I get a bit nervous that it could negatively impact me in my current position.

Go for it, don’t worry much. I did it and it went really good.

A lot of job seekers do and i think it doesn’t matter to anyone in the current company. Only recruiters from other companies can see that info, and even if recruiters from current company see it, they just ignore and move on to their candidate hunt. PS, i had asked this to one of my recruiter friends 😬

It’s how I landed interviews at Google, so 👌

Just set your profile to “open to job opportunities, only recruiters” Also look for recruiters or managers with “hiring” in their title and reach out HN hiring threads or Blind referrals are good too All of the above got me interviews in the past

In a post Great Recession world, anyone not actively building and mining their professional network and open to at least discussing new possibilities is foolish. And let's say someone at your current employer does see the "actively considering new opportunities" profile flag and questions you about it -- here's my suggested response: "I'm satisfied in my current role, but I also know no one else but me will manage my career. So I'm not going to reduce my potential employment options." If you're delivering value to current employer AND confident your manager is aware of that value, you have nothing to worry about. There's nothing wrong with being proactive about unearthing new employment opportunities.

This only works in a good environment. I currently work in a failed startup where all good people are leaving. Management has gone really bad to track, manipulate and threaten people to stay. If they know u are doing this they ll fire that guy and pretend he was bad for business, just to boost their ego.

I didn't say there was no risk in using the "open to opportunities" profile flag. Regardless, the situation you describe is a no win one: you're hanging on just to hang on. Aside from a pay check and benefits (assuming you're FTE), there's probably no professional fulfillment to be had. Everyone's situation is different, but life is too short -- find a new role at a company in growth mode and move on.

That’s been key to me getting my new job - and I still get loads of emails from recruiters.
