Live customer support is really expensive, especially for services like hotels where there are a lot of problems people can have. And their margins on each transaction are not very large. If you call them about something, there's a decent chance that they lost money on your booking. Not saying that this is the best they can do, but it's definitely a really hard problem to solve.
Incidentally, Google support is recently pretty good, but you have to pay for Google One to get it.
I've only used the chat support, but if I remember right, there's some way to talk on the phone with them if you go to the "support" section of one.google.com
