- As you can see from my TC below I am being severely underpaid. My goal is to go all in and improve my technical/interview skills to increase my TC > 300k in the next 2 years
- I am ready to put in the work needed to get there
- Any suggestions from people who are raking in a similar tc as to how to get there. What are the skills I need to work on to get to that TC?
- What differentiates people who are in the higher pay range to people who make less
- I have heard companies like Netflix, Google etc. pay salaries in this range. So , how is the interview process like for jobs which pay such TC?

Serious suggestions only please. Being used at my current company without any potential for promotion/ growth in the near future is affecting my mental well being

Thanks!

    • LC is probably the most important building block to getting past technical interviews but it’s not the only one. For example, I’ve interviewed people who’ve clearly done the LC prep but have very poor communication skills and/or write technically correct but unreadable/overly complicated solutions.

I’ve done 7 onsites at FAANG companies and only failed to get an offer once, even though I know for a fact that in some of those interviews I had a suboptimal solution. In one case the interviewer even mentioned this but said he preferred my solution to the one he was thinking of.

Looking back, what helped the most IMO is I always had at least a working solution that was easy to follow, I was able to clearly communicate my thought process and incorporate (or reject, this is important too) feedback, and I was very thorough with testing.

Leetcode doesn’t necessarily teach you those things as it’s all about getting your answer accepted for time/memory constraints. The most important use of LC for me was training my brain to immediately recognize subclasses of problems and the different tools that are normally used for those.

    • Leetcode is a mandatory necessity in getting that high TC, but certainly not enough.

To get an interview invite, you will need a strong resume that grabs attention.

To pass the interviews and get an offer, you need some soft skills and system design skills, on top of leetcode skills.

To not get pip once you start the job, you need to be a decent engineer.

It should not matter directly. In California (and some other states I believe) it is unlawful for a prospective employer to ask for your current compensation. You can refuse. Most talk in what your “target” compensation is, and you negotiate off that.

Indirectly though, they could probably guess based on your resume and lowball you if they think they can get away with it.

Props to you for doing this now with only 6 YoE. With each passing year it gets harder to make that jump - ask someone making less than you do with 20 or 30 YoE.

    Leetcode, that's the biggest difference.
