TC = $65k base. YOE = 5 Masters in finance at U of Utah (3.6 GPA) I think in Utah I could scoop a $80k job... But since joining Blind, maybe I should look elsewhere. I have interest in Austin TX (apple?), Seattle (Amazon/Microsoft?), and NY (break into investments? IB?). I'm open to go wherever the money takes me honestly... My plan is to start applying in June (company paid for my masters contingent that I stay until then) Most of my experience is corporate finance/back end work... I'm open to learning SQL/others if that'll get me in the door. I have experience with SAP, so it'd be cool to hear companies that use that... Any help is greatly appreciated! Trolls please be nice to me :)
Find a finance headhunter. Let them do the work.
I assume LinkedIn is how I find headhunters? I'm such a rookie haha sorry
Google ‘... recruiting agencies near [city you want to live in]’ then look them up on linked in and send a bunch of invites. Frankly, I’d never hire someone that was only interested in large compensation packages regardless of the company, work environment, etc. I know you want to grow, but it will be difficult to connect with a headhunter and have them take you seriously without a broader narrative than, ‘I want the money’. Unless they’re the type to throw any candidate at an employer just to fill a quota, which is a waste of everyone’s time. Come up with a bullshit excuse as to why you want to relocate to specific area other than a job with high TC. Money isn’t worth it if you have to spend the majority of your life in a shitty environment. I’m not sure how old you are, but you sound young. It’ll come in time
If you want one of the big name tech cos., individual technologies / domain expertise don’t matter that much. So skip SQL and Just grind leetcode and apply when ready.
Leetcode my way into finance eh? Maybe you're hinting me to look for more than tech companies to do finance for.. or hinting to switch careers all together.
I think they are in their own little world and misinterpreted the question while confusing the context. This platform appears to be dominated primarily by people in the Tech industry, not finance.
Get out of Utah 100%, wages are depressed there because of all of the Y and U grads willing to take low pay in order to stay in Utah
This is what I've heard too. which is why I'm open on living elsewhere... I'd prefer west side than east... Just not sure how to execute getting a job in another state!
Advice: Referral if possible (and to a specific role you find) Drop to LinkedIn/website openings (usually won't hear anything back but that's how I got into FB so postings aren't just a black hole) Spring for a month or two of LinkedIn premium, update your profile, and set your "looking for opportunities" switch on (you should start getting bites pretty quickly) Get in touch with recruiters on LinkedIn and see what they have cooking (find ones that are either full cycle or sourcing/finders specifically) Get on to all of the job sites you can (stuff like indeed prime if you are technical at all is great, you just straight up receive interview requests and they tell you salary range up front)
Learn python and SQL basics. Just do a couple hours of free courses for 2 weeks so you can put it on resume

Wait a second. You work in finance and you don’t know SQL?
Nope! My last 2 jobs never touched SQL. I see it on a bunch of job listings so I know it's common...
That should have been your cue that you must know it.
