What do you think about a role in engineering vs architecture in software? Is your company keeping the two different. Are there any pros or cons from a career standpoint.
Architecture in tech (in general) is typically above engineer and has a wider set of responsibility and greater versatility in movement IMHO. Can't speak directly to software though.
If you want a pay bump, but are not very good software engineer, you become an architect.
I've found that can be true from time to time in Enterprise Architecture as well. But architecture does serve it's purpose and is a stepping stone certainly.
An Architect should have solid skills as an engineer, but doesn't need to be a superstar engineer. The skillset that is needed is complementary to engineering. Careers can be solid in either area, but they are distinct. If you like detail work and creating, maintaining, and improving real systems, choose engineering. If you prefer fitting pieces together, dealing with ambiguity, and can handle politics, choose architect.
