currently in consulting, thinking about doing a bootcamp in either software eng or data science. how does the salary trajectory compare in these two careers?
If you're equally good at both, software engineering will pay much more in the long run. However software engineering requires a pretty specific mindset and isn't for everyone. Your consulting background suggests you probably already have a pretty anylitical mindset. I would suggest taking some sort of intro to software course and seeing if it "clicks". If it does, godspeed, if it doesn't go for Data Science and kick ass there, your personal ceiling will probably be higher. Plus you'll spend more time on the business side of the house and can probably move into the business side at some point which has the highest ceiling (again, if you're good)
Hey you seem like you know what you're talking about. I've always been a business guy. Studied mis in undergrad and joined consulting but I've always been tech focused. Got an Ms in data science from a good school and am now a data scientist at a seed stage startup. I may have an opportunity to join Google business side (TAM) in gcp. Is it too early for me to switch back to the business side?
Don’t think you can get a solid dsc education in like 6 month bootcamp anyways. You need solid mathematics foundation.
A solid mathematics foundation is an understatement.
Go for SWE bootcamp over DS, if it's about pay. But DS is a wider domain than SWE so you can chose to work on different types of problems, coordinating with stakeholders etc if that's what excites you rather than code and code reviews.
SWE >> DS > Analytics in terms of career prospects. Analytics > SWE >> DS in terms of your chances of landing a position in said field.
What do you mean by career prospects - pay?
Pay, ability to find a new job, everything. The more CS involved in the position, the higher the pay / less supply of qualified candidates.
If you wanna do real things, not building some shitty models then swe
Why is model building shitty?
Because in a lot of cases it’s going nowhere But sometimes it is, depends on the company. AFAIK in FAANG quite often data scientist are just doing BI tasks.
