Soul crushing at Amazon!

Often hear from ex-co-workers that the work at Amazon is soul crushing for SWE. Is it the long work hours or miserable culture or the poor competency of the co-workers.? Anyone care to elaborate with anecdotes? I didn't want to rub more salt on my friends by digging more. Have been considering positions across the pond, talking to them over the weekend didn't give me much positive vibes.

Those people usually failed out of Amazon and were working those long hours to try and deliver what the rest of us do in a 35 hour week.

I didn’t know you had insight into every group, project, and office at Amazon. Amazing! /s

Sony. Lol.

Yeah I’m having no issues at Amazon. Mileage likely varies but the disgruntled few are likely far more vocal than the happy Amazonians.

One more post slamming Amazon workplace 🙇‍♂️

Microsoft dKWp30 Mar 5, 2019

To be fair, teams vary widely there. I had a broad spectrum of experiences in my 3 summers there, and 2 of them were in AWS. Surprise: my favorite manager was one who was at AWS, and I had the most fun making a contribution and learning at the same time. The team culture and your direct manager really make a difference.

As an intern? Interns have a rockstar experience at MS as well. Source: Myself. When I returned as a FTE, it was so bland that I wanted to be an intern again.

I haven't seen any of this. People respect their co-workers due to their skills, it is very difficult to find incompetent SDEs. I haven't seen any long hours that are longer than any other company that I have worked at. One thing that you may find is that a regular work day of 8 hours is jam packed, there isn't a lot of time to waste. Soul crushing? Quite the opposite.

I worked at Microsoft before Amazon. May be they are comparing their Amazon experience with Microsoft ... So it's soul crushing relative to Microsoft being a country club

Microsoft ty3scv2z OP Mar 5, 2019

MS isn't a country club either. I do 50 hr weeks.

Microsoft wJgo77 Mar 6, 2019

Can confirm the country club is a thing. Amazon is well known for being a shitty place culture wise. When I interviewed there originally 9 years ago, everyone kept saying "let us know if you're having a bad time and we will change it" creepy a f. Took the job anyways. Loved it for 1 year, hated the place for 3. Microsoft is similar but very different. People seem to be in a better mood, but it's a political dick riding shit show IMO. Both have their pluses and minuses. Like who the fuck wants to live in Redmond or near it?

Microsoft ty3scv2z OP Mar 6, 2019

I wonder if the supporters of Amazon have worked outside of amazon in their careers?

Amazon bayyzoes Mar 6, 2019

18 years outside Amazon before joining

Amazon HlqC56 Mar 6, 2019

15 years. In my previous company I did maybe 3 hours of actual work a day and was a top performer. I'm now doing probably 6 hours of actual work in a day and another hour or two of goofing off. So Amazon is twice as much work but I'm still getting it done during the day.

Amazon HlqC56 Mar 6, 2019

I wonder why it's always Microsoft people making these claims. Pivot case? Microsoft was your fallback?
