Specialize in one cloud provider vs Azure and/or Google cloud Platform

Folks,

I'm already deep into AWS and need an opinion if I should keep learning AWS and get a specialized skill or learn Azure or GCP at a basic level and if yes, which one?

What is better, learning about one cloud deep and be a Subject matter Expert vs learning about multiple clouds at a basic level?

Google cloud over Azure, at least for now.

I would go GCP. All retail and small business is wising up to Amazon’s tricks; thereby rendering AWS undesirable to rely on. So you are left with GCP and Azure. Every old school enterprise is going to have some Microsoft bullshit in their stack, while GCP represents a powerful future for ML (but general cloud platform without bumpers like amazon).

Luckily, those times are ending. You get lucky as there was a generational affinity to Microsoft from business deciders with limited technical grasp. As those folks are phased out of the workforce and modern organizational structural enables more of an engineering partnership; Microsoft will fall victim to the same thing that kept it running: brand rep. Modern devs are backed in open source, non lock-in platforms and ecosystems. There’s still a pretty strong allergic reaction; especially when the nature of the ecosystem breeds second rate coders and not engineers.

    • Microsoft isn't falling victim. Nordstrom's cloud spending is small compared to many orgs.

Don't try to master all of it in another cloud. Try this:1) ML on GCP 2) Big Data or something similar on Azure. Also, being at Deloitte, with enterprises, knowing AzureStack will be useful!

  • Increasingly companies are using multiple clouds. Be familiar with both AWS and Azure to stay relevant. See https://www.zdnet.com/article/cloud-providers-ranking-2018-how-aws-microsoft-google-cloud-platform-ibm-cloud-oracle-alibaba-stack/
