Hi all, recently got an offer at Square’s Toronto office. I currently live in Seattle and am looking to relocate to Canada. Can you take a look at this package that the recruiter brought up (verbal range, no written package yet) and let me know it stands up to similar positions in Toronto area? Thank you:) My background: Recently promoted SDE2 at Amazon, ~2.5 years of work experience. Mobile dev. Square package range: Recruiter gave a range of ~105k base, 90-110k stocks, signon unclear. L4 which roughly translates to SDE2 in Amazon. If you have experience with labor market in Canada, what do you think about this package? Is it fair or somewhat of a lowball? Thank you! #package #square #toronto #canada
Yes low ball, you can negotiate upto your US salary. Seriously no kidding try it out
Interesting. Yea I’m going to talk to the recruiter next week but wanted to have a good understanding on where this package stands first
That's quite low, but don't give up and keep negotiating. Amazon SDE2 TC starts at 160-170k and can go up to 200k+. Believe or not, even new hire in Toronto can go up to 150k+ if they negotiate hard. I think it's fair for you to ask for at least 160k TC, which I think is the fair price for 2.5 YoE in Toronto (if you've got the chops). If they can't offer, walk.
Yes true. But the problem is in Toronto salaries are naturally lower than the US
I'm talking about Toronto salary. These are the numbers specifically for Amazon Toronto and similarly positioned employers like Google/Shopify (they all seem to target market p85-90). I'd have thought Sqaure would beat Amazon easily but your offer sound like a p66.7 salary :(
105K cad is around 80k usd.. now you think
You're oversimplifying a lot of things. Like...Spending 40k CAD a year in Toronto can give you much better quality fo life than 30k USD in Seattle. Tax rate in Toronto will be quite a bit higher than Seattle. Car ownership is much less meaningful in Toronto than Seattle, etc. My point is, sure, there can be quite a bit of difference in what you have left after tax and expenses, not gonna lie. But it's not as simple as a market exchange conversion, and in many cases better than what the rate suggests. OP better math the shit up and see how big the difference would be for him personally and decide if it's worth it. Personally, I dont think I'd consider a 153k USD offer as attractive as a 200k CAD one. I think a lot of people would agree with me on this.
Are you ready to face the Toronto weather?
Just relocate to an Amazon Toronto team through internal transfer. The SDE2 range in Toronto is around 170-220 CAD. If you’re moving from Seattle you can expect to be towards the top of that. (Or you can use this information to negotiate with Square)
Toronto SDE2 new offer 220k? What YoE? That seems quite high..🤑
What is your Amazon TC? Seems like a cut in salary
did u get a better offer here?
I work in Toronto. 105k base + 110k rsu = 215k for 2.5 years exp is a really good offer. For context, I am an SDE 2 with ~9 yrs of exp and making ~220k TC.
curious to know..what was your TC target when you first became an sde2? 220k seems to be close to the upper bound for the role/level.
I was hired as sde2 about 2 years ago. The tc was 125k base + 40k signing bonus. Now with the current stock price and with rsus instead of cash bonus that has risen significantly

Low-ball salary
Hm how so? What’s the ball park I should be looking at?
Last I read, a sample Amazon Toronto salary for SDE II was ~120k, so based off of that
