Are there comp differences between a Sr. UX and Sr. UI/Visual Designer at Amazon (Seattle)?
Ux is way more respected than UI. Not sure if the comp bands are different, but it's generally expected that a UX designer will bring UI skills. Also there are a ton more UX roles open right now.
Amazon puts most designers under the UX discipline. Have seen visual designers and motion designers called UX. We don’t do the product designer thing either because you’ll have to think about the whole experience of using or doing something. If you think you can change the quality of design at Amazon, that’s great! Lots of shitty designers here. Many people want better design but aren’t getting it. Hard to say if it’s deeply valued by the S team however.
Thanks for the context! What is the S team? Senior leadership? — What’s keeping you around given the lack of design talent?
S Team is senior leadership. Bezos’s direct reports. I don’t plan to stay at Amazon much longer, but I was very selective about opportunities I considered because while Amazon is frustrating it’s not necessarily bad. Sorta depends on the type of designer you are. If you prize visual design you’re going to be disappointed, because it’s not something that’s widely valued. What’s valued is exemplifying the leadership principles. Which has worked well for the company.
It’s about the same
UX pays a bit more and there are more roles
Good to know, thanks. I’ll be applying for UX then
My old team had an UX designer. I was the FE who worked closely with her. Every time she designed something, our PM and/or Sr. SDM always overruled her design.
That sucks, maybe she didn’t push back?
UX pay will be slightly higher than Visual Design.

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?

I’m looking to change that ;) Either way, hopefully means a lower barrier to entry to high comp
It’s a high bar to be a designer on my team, so I wouldn’t listen to one disgruntled SDE. Just want you to know it’s not a cake walk, but if you’ve got the skills to pay the bills, you’ll be fine.
