What’s the compensation like at Quantcast for a Staff Software Engineer? Top percentile.
170 to 210ish base with 12% bonus and a handful of equity that you can value as you will. The top of that band may be higher. We don’t make the bands public so it’s just by word of mouth.
Thanks. What’s the level for a Staff Software Engineer? Is that something like S6?
L5
Just an update. Now the recruiter is saying that the position I’m applying for isn’t really set and that after all these interviews they might give me an L4, L5, L6 position depending on the on-site interview. Is this normal? I’ve never experienced this type of interview process where I’m not even sure what I’m interviewing for now.
I interviewed with them as a Staff. Interview performance will determine your level and that is pretty common. You can DM me for details.
Yeah this is pretty common but maybe not explained very well. You would be interviewing for L5 but they are just setting expectations that you could be downleveled based on the interview. The bar for staff is pretty high. The talk of L6 is just nonsense. Ive never heard of anyone being leveled up after an interview especially to L6. But you could be promoted 6 months later based on job performance.
Additional question, what’s an on-site Staff Software Engineer (Front-End) look like? Would it be different from my first and second interviews? Both of which are usually some JavaScript coding sessions? Last question was about adapting data coming from an API. What’s Quantcast looking for a Staff SE? If you’re a QC employee, what are you expecting from me?
Independently solve complex technical and/or business problems that are both sizeable and ambiguous, Design experience, mentoring, effectively communicate complex technical information through both verbal and written means to technical audiences, articulating any assumptions and/or proposed tradeoffs.
Did you get the job? What was the onsite interview like?
The interview will be a few coding questions likely JavaScript, typescript and react focused. A more general algorithms and data structure interview and finally a systems design interview. As I said before, bar is really high for staff. Expectations are that you basically lead company-wide front end initiatives. We would also expect you to be familiar with backend technologies, deployment processes, required infrastructure, api design, etc. So just really well rounded with emphasis on the front end
Thanks. I’ve received the list of people who will interview me. Considering their backgrounds, it looks like you’re correct, this is going to focus more on the white board type of style interviews. I don’t think anyone with a strong focus on the front-end will interview me.
Do you have any specific topics for data structure or algorithms you’d want me to look into?
How did it go? Are you still in the process?
They are scheduling the on-site interview. I haven’t had any response other than the hiring manager returns from vacation today.
Just to update everyone, Quantcast was looking for a more hands-on guy as opposed someone who has more leadership/people experience.

Don't go to adtech it's a dying industry
I’m coming from the AG (agriculture) industry so I’m fairly oblivious to this but I’m also curious to know why so I may educate myself. Why is it a dying industry unless you’re Facebook or Google?
