Interviewing at a start up company in LA for a product marketing manager role (CPG). I have 5+ yoe in marketing based roles and they said base is $100k + equity which is lower than I expected. I will be going to the onsite stage and wondering if negotiating my base is realistic if I were to get an offer. if so, how much extra would be appropriate? It has $40 MM in funding with ~50 employees. Any idea what the equity % would be? Thanks for the help and please refrain from negative comments. Asking for real advice here.
If it’s an IC Role you will have an easier time negotiating for more cash than equity, but for an early start up 100k for a marketer with 5 YOE is actually pretty decent (that’s FAANG perspective for you...) You could also try to arrange more equity to be part of a bonus too if they’re being stingy with it up front.
How much would you say I could try to negotiate more for base? Minimum I wanted to move down to LA would be $115k base, but not sure if that’s unrealistic with a start up. And thanks for the advice !
LA based startups pay less than other metros, especially for non engineers. CPG pay is all over the map as a vertical with some people being paid rather low despite having a lot of experience. You can try to negotiate but unless you are bringing a key set of unique skills to the table, they'll likely do a little better (like about 10k), or just say it's their best and final and keep looking. You don't know their run rate or their margins (assuming they're even close to breakeven or profitability) but $40M in funding is likely not a whole lot and they're not in a position to pay you what you think you're worth.
Appreciate the insight. I’ll keep that in mind for this company !
