My wife wants to start a nonprofit but after submitting paperwork to get the 501(c3), she’s kinda stuck on what to do next. Her nonprofit would be collecting items for senior citizens in nursing home. These items would be from personal care to arts & crafts (kinda similar to toys for tots but will get the community involved hands on). What’s the main step of getting started after the paperwork and being successful? She has her own project called Adopt a Grandparent where she collects donations from the community to purchase gifts (this is only posted on FB and Nextdoor so it doesn’t reach a large community). She holds a gift wrapping night where the community can participate then a deliver day where they go room to room.
I agree with the above. Why does she want to start a non profit? What she’s doing is great and she can do that without the busywork. Also I don’t know why she’s stuck. Starting a non profit is the same process wise as stating an LLC, B Corp, C corp etc
A nonprofit is just like any other business. There is no “next main step,” there’s just a lot of different options. Making a business plan might help her figure out which one to do. Really, though, she should work for an existing nonprofit rather than starting her own.
Most important question: Why nonprofit? what's she wants to feel/accomplish by founding a nonprofit when there are gazillions around? is it truly trying to help other people or to feel good herself/show it of as an accomplishment? to be clear, having a vested interest is not uncommon. even though most people don't mention it openly, no one does anything unless there is something of a reward that they see. as long as that reward also creates help for others it's a win-win.

Dating for Marriage is Hard
why not just donate to an existing non profit in the same space and volunteer there
