Startup offer

I got a offer from a Series C start-up. 150k base with 20k stock option on 75m outstanding shares. Strike price $ .39. I am taking atleast 15% cut on overall compensation and perks. How does it look? And the company is in ML, analytics and cloud and founders are from MIT.

YOE? Current TC?

Cisco desiman OP Jan 2, 2019

10 yoe. Current TC 180k

Wow! Definitely the startup offer isn’t worth it. If you had like 1-2 yoe, it could make some sense to join the startup. In my opinion, don’t waste your time

Depends if you have any other offers

Cisco desiman OP Jan 2, 2019

I do not have any other offer currently.

Here are my concerns: 1. You learn how to hustle in a start up , not technology. A start up experience is. Important if you want to keep working on start ups or have your own. 2. They can always dilute the number of shares. So, your 20k shares may yield less in future. Ask the HR regarding this and negotiate accordingly. 3. Lot more stress - if you have a kid or have other interests in life , they will take a back seat.

Thanks for the concerns. Those are really good point, especially the first one. What I feel is working in Cisco is like have a secure job. Good work life balance but not kuch career advance. My primary object if I join will be to get a career advance and then switch to next good company. What do you think?

Cisco Eyeh Jan 2, 2019

What grade are you in and what are your skill sets ? I work for a group where there are ample learning opportunities. If you have enough time at work why not prepare more and go to a tier1 company or something better for your career advancement.

Dropbox QqLQ41 Jan 2, 2019

If you think it is time for you to learn and grow, maybe. If your priority is to earn, don't go. If you are from Cisco and you are ambitious and you have no tier1 offer with a big package, going to start up does teach you a lot things regardless the outcome. You don't have to be there forever. You can always leave. Working at Cisco is just waste of time unless you have no plan to advance your career and just want to focus on side hustle(real estate etc).

Cisco desiman OP Jan 2, 2019

That a good advice. I too think working in Cisco has a great benifit of work life balance and a secure career(sort of). But at this point working in a start-up can give me a push to a better career advance.

I feel like ML cloud for it to be lucrative the founders or somebody would have to have published papers or be well known in the space. Else it’s just going to crash and burn.

Cisco desiman OP Jan 3, 2019

Founders are from MIT and well known.
