Startup offer evaluation

4d 8 Comments

Hello Guys,
I got an offer from a fintech startup as a tech lead for 185k no annual bonus and .25% equity which would be vested over 4 years.
Startup is in very early stages, it did not even go for series A funding. #equity #startup

So much more information is needed here…

What space is the startup in? Is it driving revenue/is it profitable? How is the team structured? What’s the realistic growth potential based on the target market? What’s your current TC? What’s your strike price? Etc…

I would say this sounds like an exciting opportunity. If you don’t have kids/etc, this could be a great place to learn a ton of shit and make some decent money at exit.

That said, you’re saying its not driving revenue and hasn’t taken major investment (I’m guessing there’s a seed involved) so I’m guessing its a small team - I would do some diligence on the founders/your manager and make sure you’re not putting yourself in a position to get royally fucked by inexperienced leadership or unrealistic expectations.

If you do have a family, I personally would worry about the WLB and inherent stress of working at an unproven startup, but that is entirely my opinion as a risk intolerant mid 30s dude.

0.25% is too low IMO - houzz gave more % at series C-D
