Hey blinders, I am a female and have a decent job at my current company(at Symantec now) and my WLB has been really good but my overall compensation is low and not been doing any interesting work. i got an offer from start up( about 30 ppl and seed) and they are paying me almost 70K more than my current comp. This would be a big boost in our TC and help us in case of any unexpected expenses. We plan to have a family soon but worried if the work/pressure at the start up would stress me out and delay us( I’ll be turning 32 soon) in starting a family as i need to prove in the start up as well. Do you suggest taking up the offer or just continue to tread whereever i am and interview again in 1.5 years? It’ll be great if you can share your experience current TC: 135K new TC: 205K
Family always comes first
Take the new job, but not for the TC but only if you feel you’ll learn and grow from the experience, which IMO is the most important thing to gain from a startup. Startups these days aren’t as hardcore as they used to be, some can even have better wlb than FAANG, especially if you aren’t a founder (which sounds like you are not), so I wouldn’t say you’d be sacrificing chances to start a family. That said, do some research on the startup, founders and the team working there. If they don’t sound like strong egos, and if they have families of their own, I’d consider it.
Do the start-up first. If the hours are long then you’ll either find a way to make it work when you have a baby, or move on at that time. If you have the baby first you’ll be more tired and risk averse for a few years, and by the time that passes you might be in a different life phase and not have the chance again.
And I might add, if you don’t earn enough to justify $3k/month for day care, then there is a real chance you will decide to take a couple years off instead and stay home. If you do that, your career is toast. You need to get your career on track before you start a family, because everything is much harder once the baby comes.
Whatever the numbers, I stand by my points: sort out your career, because it’s harder when you have a baby; and I have seen many women leave the workforce because costs were too high to justify the lifestyle.
Family!
Try other big companies, their WLB would be good and you'd have a better TC for sure. But for now I'd vote for family.
If you like the startup and you’re only worried about the additional hours, I say go for it. That’s a lot more money and sounds like more potential career growth. I’ve seen friends “lean out”, not leaving jobs that they hate but with good WLB, because they’re planning on kids, and then... it took them a really long time to get pregnant. Or they’re still trying. Not saying that will happen to you, just that you never know how life will go and you might regret not taking the opportunity later. I understand your reasoning for wanting to stay where you are, though. Good luck with whatever you choose ✌️
I’d say take the opportunity. You can always move to a traditional company if it doesn’t work out and with the jump in TC you will have plenty to save if anything unexpected happens.
Thank you all so much. These comments are really helpful. It’s great to hear other people’s perspective. Thanks again!
