Startup uplevel for staff eng?

Oct 25, 2021 4 Comments

Hi blind,
I know startups usually uplevel you and give you next level package with paper money to attract people from top tier companies.
A few of my friends got upleveled from senior to staff, or manger to senior manager, but I don’t see them hiring for senior staff engineers from hiring website.

I have been e6 for a while now and am considering startup opportunities but would be concerned if I’d have less upsides than down.

People from startups ( c round +, pre ipo), will your company hire senior staff (L7 equivalent) externally?

Most C round company don't have L7 IC roles, even they have, they are just handful folks in the entire company. How can you make sure you can survive as L7 there? L6 to L7 is not a simple jump compared with L5 to L6. It would require you to have a very close background match.

I am in the same boat as yours, but I am looking for EM or staff roles in promising companies.

Yeah I am not sure if I can survive that but I’m confident in myself, I want to try out.

With staff level comp, I feel it might be too much to give up what I have right now, but inside me wants to go to startup.

What’s your list of promising companies? Do you mean preIPO?

My current pay is 550K ish due to Google shity pay at L6. So comp jump to 600K is somewhat attractive considering IPO jump.

Chime, plaid, brex, databricks are some good candidates. They cannot offer 750K for staff for sure( DB maybe).
