Hello Blinders,
I have been in Google for 3+ years at L5 TPM, I feel I was a severely lowballed (with PhD+10 year experience). Honestly I love the company, some of the smartest people to work with and great products but I am questioning my career growth here, and I am not ready to rest and vest yet. Specifically I am not that happy with the nature of TPM job ( it is very thankless and I am done with connecting others slack and building monthly reports). Here are few options I have:
- Move to L5 PM role in Google: I love what PM does here, and I feel like the career path is better for PM even outside. I have also spoke to few PM leads for rotation and it looks like a possible path.
- I am getting call back from my previous company ( Intel) all the time to come back ( And most likely I can negotiate a +1 grade so grade 10- As PE or Eng Manager)
- Stay as TPM and get a promotion and then decide: I have good rating this cycle and manager is say keep doing what I do and can be promoted in a year or so.

I am seriously considering exploring the Intel path as I heard the pay is better now.

What you guys think?

Iโ€™d actually advise against it. TPM is a dead end job. However if youโ€™re planning to shift internally at google, then do so only after the promo, since the clock resets. If going outside and you get an offer in excess of 400k, you should take it.

Not really. Itโ€™s much harder to get a promo than transfer. Yes itโ€™s somewhat harder at l6, but if youโ€™re going to stay at google, better get that out of the way before thinking of shifting, especially given your performance.

I donโ€™t understand the hate for TPMs. Iโ€™m a TPM. Yes the work is thankless but itโ€™s necessary and you get paid well. First to get fired are the PMs who canโ€™t get shit done and so overpaid.

If you can move into product management do so. If you can go back to intel as an L10, that also is a good option.
