Stay at Microsoft or focus on interview prep?

Aug 22, 2021 12 Comments

I worked as a non sde engineer in a completely unrelated industry for 2 years, then embedded swe for 2 years and then as a data engineer for 2 years all outside of the us.
And I have been working as l60 sde at Microsoft Redmond for 1 year.

And to top it off I got 8% rewards recently (target is 10% btw). No promotion in sight of course.

I started prepping for interviews but not feeling completely competent even for sde 2 roles...

Would you guys recommend I just really buckle down and focus on interview prep? Or try climbing the ladder at Microsoft?

Edit: Oops tc at ms is about 163k

You can do both at the same time. Interview prep and see where that takes you. If you get offers you're interested in, great! Else you can just focus on Microsoft. Depends on what you value though. If you enjoy your work and feel like comp is good, maybe wait a little

You only got 8% with a target of 10%, you are clearly not good at climbing the ladder.
Thereโ€™s def something wrong with your approach to work. Focus on interview prep first. You have 7 years of yoe. That should be at least l62, if not 63. You need that prep to bring your confidence level up, understand your weaknesses and thatโ€™ll also help you perform in your position.

Yeah you're right. It has been hard keeping myself motivated at ms. But I am pretty motivated for interview prep. Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, my advice is that when you do interview, make sure itโ€™s a team/environment that youโ€™ll perform fluently. Motivation shouldnโ€™t too hard at that time
