I’m on the promo path to L7 at Amazon , and have an inkling that I’ll get offers for e6 Facebook and 66 Microsoft . I’m interested in large scope and impact projects and potentially becoming a manager at some point . What would blind advice ?

Amazon tc : 680k
Other tc : don’t know yet

Pros:
Amazon
Machine learning science is top notch .
I’ve been here a long time, so I know how things work and have the trust of leadership

Microsoft
Again top class ML
Good WLB

Facebook
$$$$

Cons :
Amazon.
poor wlb, bad benefits etc ( no need to go into detail here )

Microsoft
Maybe pays less than others? Idk tbh

Facebook
Everyone is basically an sde . They don’t really have an ml research org outside of FAIR .
Poor WLB and super stressful

How's your TC so high at Amazon? Were you hired recently?

  • Microsoft has the best benefits and 66 is a great level to enter on. I'd say wait for the offers but consider the benefits as a big factor (especially if you have a family)

Meta has much better benefits than Google. Google is actually trying to match what Meta has.

Meta 401k from this year is same as Microsoft. Microsoft does not have child care benefits.

Meta/Google disability/death benefits are also much higher- 4x insurance, 10 years of salary will be paid, all unvested stocks will be paid.

    • I had offers from both google and meta and reading through the benefits google was much better. Higher hsa, higher number of infertility cycles, and now longer maternity leaves.

My God is this guy pretentious :)
The way you look down on SDEs as if ML is the only thing that's worth doing. You do know that the shit you write runs on platforms and services developed by "SDEs", right? I guess humility was not a lesson taught in your world-class ML degree.

And yes I'm a salty lowly SDE who is not doing any "top notch" ML.

The original poster could just be interested in either theoretical or applied ML research and thus ranks potential organizations accordingly. There's nothing inherently wrong with that.

If you’re an applied scientist, ML is your field. SDE is just a different discipline, just like ME or EE. As an SDE, I don’t look down on EEs, I’m just not qualified to do that job and uninterested in pursuing those roles (because I’d suck at them).

I guess OP is not really an AS/RS(data scientist pretending to be the ML guy) or he is one in Alexa org.
I used to be L6 AS in Amazon GO and can say that we didnt do any research we just used models built by Google and FB and fine tuned them to our use case, and dont even mention cross org engagement with Alexa for ML projects, tried to drive one and it was a shit show, most of the science folks in Alexa are just over glorified data engineers.

I am in G now and I tell you Amazon ML is atleast 20 years behind!

Also it would be better if you have offers from the names you mentioned rather than just being over confident and speculative about it.

PS: never ever say that Amazon science is world class, people who work in the field know the reality and you just come out looking like a fool!

Wow @Gkjf16 you really are a sore loser.
I read this thread from top to bottom, I got what jXnY38 is trying to convey, but your comments on the other hand are incoherent, you are just arguing for the sake of arguing!!

Just read the rest of the comments on main thread and you will hear similar sentiments of poor state of things at amazon.

One guy can have a bad experience but when so many people resonate same issue, something must be really wrong.
