Stay or Leave?

Working at AWS. Joined outta college ~1.5 years ago and have definitely learned a lot. I just really hate the fact that I'm not doing as much coding as I wanted to. A lot of it is annoying bullshit ops stuff that could be automated or fixed if my team didn't use outdated software. We're wary on upgrading because it'll break a lot of other things and will require a lot of work to get things working again (tier-1 service) However, my team and manager are super amazing. Everyone is extremely helpful, almost no politics, and my manager not only looks out for the product's future but my future as well and helps ms grow a lot. During 1:1s my manager gives very solid advice which has helped me grow. Would like some feedback on this. TC: 155k

Stay, but with Other: exhibit ownership and other LPs. If you know theres a better way/more efficient way why not build out a high level plan of action of the upgrade process, timeline and the risks, etc and present it to your manager and skip? Then go from there. Sounds like you have a good relationship with your manager so they should be receptive.

Hard to get good managers who really care for your growth and a helpful team

This. I would only move companies if I get 40-50% hike at a new role with an okayish senior team. Until then, enjoy your gem of a manager who gives a shit about you and focus laddering up.

If the ops stuff and legacy tech debt is the reason you're leaving, you're only going to be disappointed when you're at somewhere else, besides, people leave managers not jobs, is it worth it to risk working for someone new who may never appreciate you?

How far away from promo are you? SDE2 promo will give you leverage

I've left amazing teams before and I have to say it's hard to come by a manager like that, I would stay at this point in my career and figure out how I can get product ownership, but at the one you're at in your career, I would leave and explore.

I’ve had similar concerns so I left.
