Current status: age 33Y, married, no plan to have kids. stay in Yahoo for 5y, Yoe: almost 9y new company TC: raise 20% (not in the state) job position: Sr. backend developer Stay with Yahoo: - pros: 1) super great wlb 2) flexible remote work (even after RTO) 3) salary should be already at top 15%-20% for the software industries in my country. - cons: 1) It's not that easy to build/polish my backend skill set in Yahoo anymore. 2) Salary raise is slow, the new Apollo acquisition deal makes everything uncertain. New company: - pros: 1) Backend skill set could be both horizontally and vertically improved. (for me, horizontally: cloud services like aws/gcp / golang, vertically: msg queues, mem caches, k8s) 2) They want me to be the team tech lead of the backend team for the branch of my country. (HQ: Singapore, and they let me to decide and interview for new members of my team ~5 ppl) - cons: 1) Should be no wlb at least for the first year I guess. 2) No remote work flexibility after RTO, they say the team tech lead should showed up in the office. 3) Commute: driving from home to office, the round trip is 2hr, totally waste of my life. I am targeting the staff engineer level overseas for the "next next" job (Japan, Europe, US, UK, Australia, Not Singapore), to experience different cultures and travel. If I keep doing the current job, I guess it would be hard to reach that level, but somewhat still can apply job overseas and get 1 or 2 jobs with so-so salary. My dream is to work in different countries and travel for a while, then apply another job in another country until 40-45y, then back to my home country and retire. What will you choose if you were me?
Commute sounds terrible fuck that
Tough commute
Don’t take the commute. Trust me. Not worth it.
Commutes sucks ass. And add to an already bad WLB.
2 hour commute and no WLB? Do you want to suffer?
Based on this list, stay with Yahoo
Sounds like the new company culture is another concern. Where you see rigidity you should also expect micromanagement and bureaucracy. Once you want to move abroad, you’ll be able to find a job - don’t worry about current leveling.
What is ur current tc?
Y'all are crazy. Unless your paying off big debt don't ever suffer a 2 hr round trip commute.
