After interviewing for a few months I got a few offers (Linkedin, Uber, Google, Amazon, Twitter). I gave it a lot of thought and I will start with Uber in a few months. I should be happy but I am kind of stressed instead. Feeling overwhelmed with all the changes (Leaving my girlfriend and friends, moving to the US, etc). I always wanted to work on my ideas and run a start-up and it's one of the reasons I am moving to San Fransisco. I hope to see like-minded people there to share my ideas with them. However, being in my early 30s I keep hesitating about my decision. If you had a similar experience in the past I would be happy to hear your story. Also, what are your thoughts on starting a business considering the possible upcoming recession?
Moved to sf from Canada 2 months ago. Sf is a tough city to live and you likely will have to make some sacrifices on your quality of life even on an uber salary. Professionally and financially it has been totally worth it though. Also I’m not sure how an upcoming recession is relevant to your decision?
Are you happy with you decision so far? Worst case scenario after saving for a few years we could go back to Canada. I am moving from Ottawa
I think many start ups will fail when they hit the recession
I had a similar dilemma. I made sure to interview only for uber Palo Alto teams because I didn’t want to move to the city.
How did that go?
Who cares?
SF/Bay is only for families—if you are a couple with no kids, get some pets. If you are single find some tv shows and prepare for a life alone, best luck. Or, move to NYC and have the time of your life!!
I have heard that from others too. I guess it's a choice between career and relationships
What? Why?
It shouldn’t be a choice between career in The Bay and relationships! NYC has Google, Facebook, Amazon, Uber, Lyft, Snap, and more!
True, I never considered NYC since I had the startup goals in my mind. Maybe I consider it if I decided not to work on my startup
SF is great, move out here.

I hope so...
No real advice here, but I hope it all works out for you OP!
Congrats on your offers! Came from Toronto to SF two years ago. Early 30 as well. I'm happy but I think I'm more exploratory than other people. Dating situation for me was pretty good - I personally think that there is less competition here.. as in, although there are more guys, most can't talk to girls. A lot of smart people here. Am I happier here? Can't say, but I would have dreaded many days thinking about what life in SF would have been like.
This is kind of comforting actually. Thanks for sharing
Uber has had some pretty evil behavior. I would never want to work with people like that.
I've heard about that, but before the new management. Things look better now
If your plan is to start your own business/startup eventually, dont stay at Uber for long. You’ll be too busy at your day job to learn much about starting a business. Try to join a startup when you get the chance.

I didn’t come as far as you, but I moved across the country to SF. I’m actually leaving in 2 weeks to move back to the East Coast to be with friends and family. My honest opinion is SF can be incredibly isolating, and hard to meet new people when you’re starting with no base. But, you gotta give yourself as many opportunities to break through as possible. Always say yes to new social opportunities. Do your best to expose yourself to new things. As far as American cities go, even with all its problems, its still definitely up there as far as best places to be go.
That's disappointing to hear, what do you mean by no base?
I’m assuming you don’t know anyone here, correct? I had no one here that I could fall back to for reliable, enjoyable social contact, which was a massive change for me. Building that for yourself ASAP should be your number one priority
