Stripe WLB

Hey all, I'm *very* interested in working at Stripe, but there is one line in the culture doc that gives me pause. "But working here will mean some late nights, some weekends, and (especially if you end up in a position of significant responsibility) paying attention to email even during off-hours." How often is this? AWS has crunch every year round reinvent, but as far as I've seen, it's really only a few weeks in November. And even then, I haven't worked a weekend in over 4 years. I also currently don't even have work email installed on my phone. Would this be a significant problem? Edit: link -> https://stripe.com/jobs/candidate-info

"paying attention to email even during off-hours" lol this is a no go

Yeah, that was a red flag for me. But would also be open to hearing experiences from Stripes as well. Maybe it's not the case? I hope, at least.

They forgot to mention Slack!?

Amazon cayde OP May 23, 2019

Yeah, I heard slack was a big tool for communication there. I'm more or less okay with IM if it's a question. But I'm also okay to say, "I'll get back to you tomorrow" if it's not an emergency.

I was being sarcastic, but Slack can be very easily abused and there can be unrealistic expectations on being always on all the time depending on the company culture.

Depends on team

Lol, that username. Gotcha! I guess as with Amazon, that's what it really boils down to.

They’re probably trying to weed people out. I’ve heard WLB is good, but of course depends on team and manager. Settings boundaries is important.

Amazon cayde OP May 23, 2019

That sounds about right. There were other references, such as "don't come looking for a cushy job". Agreed. As long as I can establish boundaries early on, hopefully it wouldn't be a problem.

Mostly a filter. Talk to a recruiter and feel free to ask upfront and if screen goes well ask to talk to someone at your level to 'discuss culture' and ask them also.

Awesome!! Thank you very much! Crunch time isn't a deal breaker. Unavoidable in this industry. I just want to make sure it's not an everyday thing.

I attended the coffee chat about remote positions this week, very informative. I applied via the site, but even with Amazon on my resume, who knows. Currently reaching out to a recruiter in LinkedIn.
