asking for a friend (whos not on blind), deciding between new grad offers for Stripe and MS she’s leaning towards MS because of location, wl balance, and higher take home money but doesnt know the team or work so is unsure about the growth she’d experience there. Stripe is “hotter” with a choice of team and bigger impact, but wl balance might be compromised and she doesn’t want to live in SF thoughts?
Stripe hands down. Microsoft has been the new IBM for a long time now. Development practices, tech stack, mindset are all very outdated. The difference in where she’ll be 5yrs down the line is pretty dramatic between the two companies. Also the initial comp for new grads might look good at Microsoft but the key is that the refreshers are practically nothing. Comp at Microsoft is not competitive with Stripe and other top companies.
Stripe! Definitely not MS. As a new grad in Microsoft, your main job is writing unit test for other's code! You will be treated like shit in Microsoft! Please don't go, don't want to see another soul been crushed...
And for the unit tests, the original code wrote by those 'experienced' Microsoft guys are so disgusting. You will realize later the only reason they have a higher title is because 1. All the good engineers has left. 2. They are very into the political games..
Never seen this. All out interns and new hires write all the code and their own unit tests for their feature.
Holy crap why would this even be a question?! She'd be insane to take MS over Stripe!
You guys have a very strange tainted perspective. I've been at MSFT for many years and have done things that are unthought of at other companies in terms of impact. From owning critical kernel components as a relatively junior engineer to shipping software to millions of users with a weekly release cadence. It's a large company of small teams where you can have an incredible impact. It's also very diverse -- whatever you can think of - this company has it or has done it. Now, there are shitty toxic teams -- that's true of any large company. You just need to identify them and move on quickly. Such teams (Mediaroom is one example) tend to get shut down or sold eventually.
Take MSFT just for the tag leave in a year.
If you’re already from a good school you don’t even need a tag
Not bullish on stripe, go MS if she wants to be able to change groups w/o prepping for interviews.
Stripe is in a crowded market and msft generally promotes well
Stripe then switch to another Bay Area company after a year
Lol, is your friend high? Stripe obviously!
MICROSOFT, it’s changing and promotion velocity is good
It has been changing like 16 years now. I remember Balmer's One Microsoft in 2012. Then Satya in 2014. Sure, it has changed a lot but so have other companies.
Well I see a massive change in Office org and we are learning a lot, my team does open source, uses latest and greatest and I am able to award 63 and up random Special stock awards ranging between 20-50 k on top of salary and bonuses which is keeping them around, unlike other orgs, we need to do this wider across the company and make sure we retain folks
What? How's this even a question? Work life balance a concern for new grad? Stripe engineering is strong, and she'll learn a lot.
She will also learn a lot at MS and our engineering scales to billions of users
Honestly, I’d go to Stripe. One of my former Eng mgrs is at Stripe and he’s the smartest guy I’ve ever met.
