Feel stuck at Google without any path to next career step. I heard many stories of people who left but came back to Google because of xyz.... Are there any success stories after people who left Google and grew well in career
Lyft has a few successful directors and at least one VP from Google.
Rachel Kroll (lots of stuff about her on HN and in her blog rachelbythebay.com) started Google at a level 4, went on to do great things at Facebook and then at Lyft. She’s a principle engineer now.
Is this the step where people choose to either “rest and vest” or move somewhere else? I have heard of many stories.
I guess.... I can rest n vest but I am sure I will regret the fuck out of my life
If you're at the right level at google to bank AND can succesfully rest and vest, you should have a ton of time and knowledge to do something fun on the side. Going to startups don't pay more than google unless you are literally starting it up yourself or in the initial group. I feel you though. What do you do? Go somewhere you actually like and make half the money? These companies have a monopoly on talent.
No man. No one succeeds outside google. Only googles are successful. Rest of the seven billion people are all losers. You are the envy of them all.
Cool... Similarly I guess everyone is ashamed of you.... Also I could be a woman...
Could be, but statistically are not
Kevin Systrom, the co-founder of Instagram.
Uh, doesn't Google let you rejoin within a year? And I'd your not happy there why not switch to a diff team/org/location?
They do, but at the same level and TC. It's basically like a backup-plan. They won't consider your experience while away, you'll have to re-interview if you want a higher level or TC.
Who told you about TC? Afaik only releveling requires reinterview. Unless requested TC exceeds the bucket for the level
Interested. My 2 cents: FAANGs are just for prestige. Granted, the infra and benefits are top notch. But there's not a lot of ownership and growth unless you're in the top 5%. Startups / mid-sized companies (right now - Lyft, Instacart etc) are better once you get the name on your resume, and you want more visibility, ownership and TC ofc.
Can't help you without TC and YoE
Was Google your first job?
Yes. And scared to let it go
You already had a great start, look at what's outside. I can't wait to leave Facebook and join some startups
