No free food or soft drinks. And worst of all, they only pay for coach for work flights, even international.

  • you'll probably be better off in the long run not getting free food and sodas.

Yes. A free fully-equipped onsite gym is far better to health and productivity. I can't imagine the second half of the workday without spending my lunch break under a barbell.

Yeah, I've put on some weight with two fully-stocked kitchens and regular catered lunches. I don't eat them anymore since I'm trying to lose weight. It's not as great of a perk as it sounds for an office worker.

No Free food, no free snacks should be complaints from homeless people, not someone who earns 6 figures

And I have always believed it's a relatively inexpensive way to keep people on campus working longer.

Which would you prefer... a place that has a proven business model that continues to grow or a small startup that has an unproven solution but all the free snacks, Coconut waters and gourmet coffee you can consume. Both opportunities exist.... what is your risk appetite?

Is that expected in Silicon valley?

Such things are nearly unheard of here in the Midwest. I'm happy to have a great on-campus cafeteria with reasonable prices and break room coffee that isn't just foldgers.

Yeah I'd take a gym over free snacks. Also I'll take the extra 10k salary over a few few candy bars

I feel that I'm in the same position. I've maxed out my potential here and want to get out of philadelphia back to the roots of the Bay Area. Any advise on applying to Amazon?

People move from the Bay Area to Philadelphia? How did you decide on that?

Am I the only one who has to fly coach on all my international flights? It's not easy to qualify for an upgrade here at MSFT.
    Jul 14, 2017 11
    • Microsoft TmiP32
You can get the flights you want, but can't upgrade to another class without approval of sr management or if you fly internationally several times a year.

Business class can is often quadruple or more the cost of coach. It just doesn't seem to be a cost effective business decision to offer it to every employee. A trip that might have been $3000 in expenses now becomes $10000, and for many trips that people take, it's hard to argue that they are actually able to add $10000 in value that they couldn't have added without taking the trip.

Comfort can make the difference between an employee deciding to take a trip or not. Do you want to encourage or discourage travel?

I work at Amazon and have met with people who traveled to the Seattle office from Europe and Asia, and they all complained about the discomfort of flying coach. Amazon treats employees like dog shit.

@TVbB32 the business class can save an entire shitty, unproductive day. Which is probably worth a few thousand.

I'm not sure how you got from $3k to $10k. Maybe flying from New York to Asia on business class will cost $7k more..... But from the west coast.... Asia is pretty close and European flights might go from $1k to $4 or $5k.

I get free drinks/snacks. Just gotta be in the right org. Every VP/Sr mgr has money they can spend on employees it's just whether they want to or not. Find a better VP?
