Does anyone know if there is a possibility to survive a PIP at amazon? Is there a possibility to not get PIP or oppose it by providing enough support for it. I have heard recently amazon has removed the pivoting against PIP thing? And now there are only two options accept PIP or accept severance?
Yes you can survive PIP, but it means your performance has to change. Up to you whether that happens, the PIP spells out the details for you.
Boss is saying that he has full confidence that the person will come out of it but i am not sure if the boss can be trusted
My two cents, for you/your friend to consider. People do emerge from PIP and go on to do well. That said, depending on the identified area for improvement, sometimes it can just be too hard. Making up an example, suppose one growth idea is to showcase ability to drive a project independently. Within a period of 2 months, it can be hard, if the person has to identify a project, scope or correctly, and execute on it. If you haven’t been able to do this in the months leading up to the PiP, i don’t see how you could magically be able to do this in 2 months. All the best!
Stop pretending that it is your friend.
This was for your friend correct? I think you made a post about it a couple of days ago?
Yes
PIP is performance impossible plan, most managers do it because HR won't allow them to fire the employee without notice. Getting out of it is usually extraordinarily hard, you will have to endure months of micro-managent and even the slightest misstep, accidental or deliberate, is counted against you. Amazon would be no different, it's happened at Google, Cisco, FB, etc. Even if you miraculously survive, it will take you 2 more years before u start receiving refreshers, bonuses, etc. Would recommend looking elsewhere.
Coming out of PIP is not impossible but have a very low probability. Remember, a manager has to do a lot of paperwork for this, and pushing low performers out of team is also considered positive for a manager, so extra motivation to manage someone out of the company. In summary, if you are in PIP, you are screwed (start looking outside), unless you are a long time Amazonian with good contacts.
What I see is that, you need to accept that it's the end of Amazon life and you can either use PIP to buy sometime for finding a new job or take the severance, if you could find the job before that. I have read stories that three are dirty secrets your manager would pull off even if you pass the PIP as a failure in PIP made by him, would affect his measures. So, there isn't a way to get out unless your manager gets booted. You could have escaped this when impromptu meeting for dev list happened. Often before the list is made, you could have interviewed for another team. So, to your question: No. You can buy some time yourself or have that money. And it's not often three months, the manager toolkit would have the PIP Severance Calculator and it's based on tenure.
Do they really offer severance pay? How much? And if it is a decent pay, why not go on a vacation and come back and work for a better company?!
Stop pretending it’s for your friend. We all Know it is for you! And if you can’t post a genuine question on an anonymous forum you don’t deserve genuine answers either.
