I am bored of working as a software engineer and honestly need the diversity in projects. Also I want to try consulting before I go 10 years deep into SW Dev. Anyone here switched from SW Eng to big 3 (Bain/BCG/McKinsey) without an MBA? What was your experience like?
Probably going to get some biased views here on both sides of coin. Very very different work, targeting much higher up in the food chain than the developers. Great way to head to a lot of top roles in PE/VC etc. It is true that a lot of MBB also head to PM as well. The people skills you learn at MBB (honestly most of the job) will typically also help to advance your PM career in tech as well
MBB would certainly give you variety, but be mindful of the variety you are looking for. Take a look through Mayor Pete’s client list, as one data point. It is a pretty representative collection of uninspiring clients that can’t attract and retain their own top-tier talent. That makes MBB a great place to learn, but one day you’ll want to leave consulting - then what? You don’t need me to tell you High Tech recruiters/Hiring Managers certainly don’t care about consultants. PMs need to ship product. Intrinsics and PPT only carry one so far. Ex-McK
Downgrade honestly. MBB are busy moving into PM roles back at your old companies.
