I have worked at Apple, Netflix and Facebook for a total of 14 years in non-tech roles. Although I can grow in my role, I am not very excited about it. I am considering switching to Product Management and have a few questions: 1) Is it possible? Would any company even interview me without prior PM experience on my resume? 2) I am assuming I’ll take a level hit, but how bad. Will I have to start from L3 or is it just one level hit (L5 instead of L6)? 3) Facebook is really bad at role changes, so I’ll have to switch companies. Any suggestions on where to look for jobs?
in other words : 3) none. 2) yes within FB. 1) no unless random startup

I haven’t done shit today!
You can switch within FB. Lots of people do it. You will get a one level hit. You need very strong relationships with execs or PMs to make it happen. But that’s still easier than being hired from the outside as a PM with no experience
Appreciate the response. I worked closely with PMs at Apple, but none at FB. So I don’t have what you suggested above at FB. I’ve asked around the common answer is that FB is snobbish about PMs and won’t even talk to anyone who hasn’t been a PM since they came out their mothers womb.
I’d recommend first switching internally to a role where you work closely with PMs. Then switch. No one will hire you externally for PM at yojr level of experience ... too much risk
