These hedge funds and prop shops are supposed to have a similar tech-first attitude to FANG while paying more. How much more would they have to pay for you to leave FANG?
@cool_putra - not hedge funds, but been in the industry and had to work with various hedge funds. And yes - @GilBates is right. Tech is never first.
It’s finance: You should be getting paid at least double or multiples to make up for the abuse you will be taking.
I would question the assumption that these companies pay more for non quants
So pay is on par in your experience?
From what I've seen target comp at each level is about the same, but if you find something you're good at you can get promoted faster at hedge funds. Your comp also isn't affected by changes in stock price, which I guess can be good or bad depending on your risk tolerance.
People who say they wouldn’t have no clue what prop shops are like at all
If you like working in smaller teams with more work, more pace, more ownership, more ambiguity join quant funds. Depends on the firm though. Culture really sucks across hedge funds. The ones you have named are better than most other funds still worse than FANG. You need to be an A player.
And no, these hedge funds never have tech first. Be there if you like being a second class employee.
Any prior real world experience backs that statement ?
Worked at Goldman Sachs as quant researcher for sometime.
