I am a SDE in office team and want to switch to a ML related role in Azure or Bing. How difficult to move for L61 or L62 without any prior industry experience on ML? How can the preparation be made otherwise?
Difficult to very difficult to move. You'll end up building ML infrastructure. Just a guess.
Is it still possible to get an offer and slowly get into ML related works over some time? What skills are expected to get an offer?
Agree. Some of friends my tried, they build ML infra or worse, some are Data Engineer or Data Analyst. Modeling ML models usually demands Ph.D. If Microsoft offers mentorship program, choose a mentor who is building ML models and ask how you can make a move. Directly getting an offer will be a Blackbox & you might end up making infra. Try moving with current employer
I'm a ml manager. Know this, ml isn't just the modeling. In fact all the auxiliary things around is what gets paid well. You know how to put together a ml platform, Your are way more valuable. Any kaggler can build a model now, not everyone can put a ml model in a scalable way into a product. The modeling side is just 5-10 percent of the real work and trust me, those people get paid less than the mle people unless of course you are Ian Goodfellow or someone at that caliber
Could you talk more about the specific skills for an MLE. I'm interviewing for MLE positions, DS here. Thanks
Any suggestions on ramp up will help. (Name of courses)
Curious why you want this move? I heard (not saying I agree with) ML eng is not as versatile as SWE for future career growth concern, and is sort of 2nd tier comparing to ML scientists. Could you share some thoughts?
I think I was ambiguous in my question. I work in team where I do not like the work we do. It's a saturated segment. As a beginner I want to work better. Considering a good scope on data science, I was planning to switch to a role that involves solving good data science problems.
How's office 365 team? I am not a fan of Microsoft but I really love Office 365 product & want to work on it. Would you recommend working for that team? Is feature development still a thing or more of maintenance?
Very new to Microsoft, do not have enough knowledge to answer
