I'm still early in my career, so want to take opportunity to explore more, various domains. I would like to experience the other top tier tech companies (OTTTC) like Airbnb, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest. At the same time, I'm very curious & excited about hedge funds and NYC culture. I'm in bay area, single, have some friends here and like the weather. NYC weather would be very different for me and don't have friends there. So I'm thinking of moving there after marriage in like 1-2 years. My question is- would it be easier to move to hedge funds from Google compared to other top tier companies? Now that Google is already on the resume, would it make a difference even if I move to other companies before I move to hedge funds? What would you do if you were in similar situations? Glossary: G - Google HF - Hedge Fund / High Freq Trading / Algo Trading / Investment Management OTTTC - Other Top Tier Tech Companies
Hedge funds are market neutral, their returns and investments are purposely done in a way to have no correlation with sp 500. Also if you go towards hft they love greater volatility and they make the most money then.
I don’t think hedge funds tries to co relate with any of the market Indexes. Hedge funds can make money even if market goes down as they play in securities and derivatives more than normal equity’s.. why it’s unsafe at recession is because not many opportunities lies in down time
Actually its the other way for hfts downtime/volatility gives market making firms more alpha opportunities.
Move to NYC when young and move back later. You can always return to Google for the same level

Right now is not a great time to join Financial company .. Careful with recession triggers around .. I personally would wait in a safe boat for next 3 years if I could
Thanks. That's a good point. But it's like whether to invest in stocks now or not. There would be a recession or there won't be. People have been talking about the recession since 2016. So if I wait for 3 years and there is no recession, that would be a huge opportunity cost. OTOH, if I move and there is a recession, it would be scary. Not sure which way to go.
My thought your resume is already strong with google you’ll definitely have a job. I’d gamble with the hedge funds and honestly nyc is an awesome city (haven’t personally lived in Bay Area though)
